I like to travel.
Gardens at Ginkakuji, Kyoto, Japan. 2012 |
I like “big” travel and “small” travel –
two weeks in Europe or two days in Stinson Beach. I like to travel with friends
and family, and I’ve grown to enjoy traveling solo. I don’t like staying in
hotels. I’ve learned that I like to feel like I have a “home” in the city I’m
visiting, and hotels never feel like “home” to me. “Home” needs a kitchen. I
don’t think I’m particularly adventurous, but I like to plan my own itinerary
and packaged tours have never appealed to me, nor have cruises, although this
can make my trips abroad seem more like “work” sometimes than “vacation.”
Here’s a list of (some) places I’ve traveled abroad so far:
Madrid, Spain: 2001(?), a short, crazy trip with my third-year studio class
Shanghai, China: 2002, four-month study abroad
Taiwan: 2002, 11 days with friends
Shanghai, China: 2002, four-month study abroad
Taiwan: 2002, 11 days with friends
The UK and Ireland: 2008, about 3 weeks partly solo,
partly with some friends and my sister
Rome and Florence: 2009, about 2 weeks with my Mom and
Aunt
Tokyo, Kyoto and Seoul: 2012, 2 ½ weeks mostly solo, with
friends in Seoul
Paris, Venice and Milan: 2013, 2 ½ weeks with my Mom and
Aunt
Here and there I’ve also been to Seattle, Chicago, a
minute in Portland, and spent some time here and there in LA and Burbank. Most recently I spent five days in the South
Carolina Lowcountry and Charleston, my first visit to the South.
